How To Maintain A Driveway During Winter

As the nights draw in and the weather changes as we head into winter, we take a look into how to maintain your driveway during the colder months. Have you recently had a new driveway in Exeter? Or are looking into driveway landscaping for the future? iDream Solutions are experts in groundworks and professional landscaping for driveways and pathways, for both domestic and commercial properties.

There are many reasons to keep your driveway maintained, not just through winter, but throughout the year too. Read on to discover some easy-to-follow tips and tricks to ensure your driveway is as good as new this winter.

Winter-proofing Your Driveway Surfacing

Care and attention to your driveway will see it through for many years to come, not just winter. If you’ve invested in resin bound surfacing, block paving Devon or even tarmac recently and aren’t sure how to winter-proof your driveway, we have the knowledge and preparation tips you need.

Maintaining Resin Bound Surfacing

Naturally, resin bound surfacing and driveways are weather resistant due to the nature of the materials used when laying the product ( Addagrip ). For the best results in the run-up to winter though, keep the surface clean using a simple soap wash and brush. This will eradicate any dirt that has settled over the previous weeks or months and will keep your resin driveway surface looking vibrant throughout the winter, especially if you have lighter-coloured stone. Many of our customers who have had driveway repairs in Devon and have chosen to have resin bound surfacing also choose to collaborate it with their pathway to the house, or around the exterior of their home, to the back gate or garden. Again, keeping these areas clean from debris throughout the winter will allow for easier cleaning in the Spring.

Keeping Block Paving Clean During Winter

Block paved driveways and pathways can look brilliant ahead of all types of properties, especially with the ability to choose different patterns and brick colours. However, the maintenance of a block paved driveway in the run up to winter can take a little longer than that of the resin surfacing or tarmac driveway.

Depending on the groundworks underneath the block paving, there may be chances of weeds growing through the mortar between the bricks. Ideally during September or October, you will want to weed around the areas using weed killer to minimise chances of them growing through again. What’s more, if you have sand or mortar pointing missing between the bricks, do be sure to get a professional block paver to replace these before the winter. Water and ice can damage gaps further, so it is better to get it done sooner rather than later.

Do be sure to talk with your landscapers and block paving designers before laying your new paved driveway to see if it is the right surface for your property.

Preparing Tarmac Driveway for Winter

Although the British weather is somewhat unpredictable, we can almost be certain that there will be icy conditions at some point during the winter months. If you have a new tarmac driveway or aren’t sure how to maintain it during the colder spells, then be sure to invest in a sealant as this will protect the tarmac from cracking due to water and ice expanding the surface. If you aren’t sure on the best sealant for your tarmac driveway, then be sure to contact the iDream Solutions team, who will be able to point you in the right direction.

Like all driveways, do make sure that any debris or dirt is cleared from the surface. This is because:

  • It may contain chemicals that could damage the surface of the tarmac
  • It is much harder (and less safe) to clean a driveway when it is icy and trying to pick up debris that is stuck to the surface may damage it as well.
