Artificial Grass Maintenance – What You Need To Know

Artificial grass is a fantastic product and material and can look fantastic all year around, even if it is in constant use! If you have recently had artificial grass installed in your garden, you may be wondering how you should maintain it to keep it as good as new. In this article, our professional Exeter artificial grass installation team shares their top tips on artificial grass maintenance and what you should consider to make sure your new surface lasts for years to come.

Keeping It Safe For Children & Pets

One of the main reasons why homeowners and property owners make the transition from real grass to artificial grass is to ensure pets and children have a safe and clean environment when enjoying the outdoors. To make sure the synthetic grass continues to be a safe haven, you’ll want to regularly remove leaves and debris that may get stuck in between the grass. You can do this by using a leaf blower, stiff brush or a plastic rake – all of these options won’t damage your artificial lawn.

General Artificial Lawn Maintenance

The main advantage of having an artificial lawn is that it is a low maintenance option compared to real lawn. However, there are ways to ensure that your new lawn will last for a long period of time:

For Pet Stains And Smells

To keep your lawn looking and smelling fresh throughout the year, you’ll want to use an artificial lawn spray to remove and clean any stains or smells caused by your pet(s). We would recommend using a spray every few weeks, otherwise the smell could penetrate into the deeper layers of the material. The spray won’t damage the lawn, but rather keep it looking brand new!

A simple homemade, diluted solution of vinegar and water will work perfectly for this. Before you spray, we’d advise sprinkling the area with baking soda so any stubborn smells or stains can be lifted from the material, which you can then wipe away with a sponge.

General Stains

Just like pet smells and stains, general stains can be lifted off easily if spilled onto your new artificial lawn. Of course, with any stain and material, the quicker you act to remove it – the easier it will be. If you have spilled a liquid such as wine, juice or sauce, try to soak up any of the liquid with a sponge, towel or kitchen roll as soon as possible. If this has left a mark or stain, we’d recommend the following:

  • Mix together warm water and washing up liquid, apply to the area and rub it in with a cloth or bristle brush. Once done, remove any excess liquid with a towel or kitchen roll and make sure any stains have been removed.
  • Use a hose or watering can to rinse and wash away any suds from the washing up liquid and leave to dry.

For stubborn stains, or if a stain is hardened, try using a toothbrush or a plastic knife to remove it. If you use a big brush with force, it could ruin the artificial fibres.

Keep Away From Fire

Do not place BBQs, fire pits or fire related items on your artificial lawn. For any reason ash, cigarettes or fire falls onto the surface, it could melt the fibres and leave a burnt patch on your brand new artificial lawn.

Avoid Placing Heavy Furniture On The Grass

Just like a beautiful rug in your living room, artificial grass can suffer from imprints of heavy furniture, for example garden tables and chairs or trampolines. Placing large or heavy pieces of furniture or play equipment on the grass can leave a temporary imprint and flatten the grass. To prevent this, you can move the furniture to a different part of the garden every so often to give the grass time to readjust to its original state. You can also encourage the grass to do so by using a brush or rake in the opposite direction to the fallen fibres.
